September 11, 2001: Pain, Hardship, and Understanding Why the Attack Happened Introduction September 11, 2001 , became one of the defining days of the modern world. What began as an ordinary Tuesday morning in the United States quickly became a devastating national tragedy that affected millions of people far beyond America's borders. On that morning, members of the terrorist organization al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes. Two aircraft were flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York City. Another struck the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew members attempted to regain control of the aircraft. Nearly 3,000 people were killed, including passengers, office workers, firefighters, police officers, emergency responders, and people working in and around the World Trade Center.
